Rooted in community, trained for impact
"We learn where life happens."
The Philosophy
Health sciences training doesn't only happen in lecture halls and simulation labs — it happens where people live, work, and seek care. Our students learn by stepping into real communities, where their developing skills make a meaningful difference to the healthcare facilities that host them.
Evolution
Seventy years ago, when this faculty was established, clinical training was confined to two hospitals in the Western Cape, reaching only a fraction of the population. Today, our students train across dozens of hospitals, clinics, and community health centres in the Western Cape, many of which are in rural areas where the need is greatest.

Infrastructure
This expansion is driven by intent. At its core is the Stellenbosch University Logistics for the Clinical Training Platform (SunLoc) team — a dedicated infrastructure built to bridge the gap between campus and community. By providing safe transport, secure accommodation and integrated academic support, the SunLoc team ensures that our students can focus on developing clinical skills in the heart of the real world.
Safe, reliable transport connecting students to clinical sites across the province.
Secure housing near training facilities, so students can focus on learning.
Integrated academic guidance ensuring clinical placements enhance learning outcomes.
In the Field
Every placement strengthens local healthcare while shaping the next generation of clinicians.

Voices from the Field
Real student voices to be added as our oral-history collection grows.
"Working in a rural clinic changed everything I thought I knew about medicine. You learn to listen differently when resources are scarce."
"The community doesn't just host us — they teach us. Every patient encounter is a lesson in humility and purpose."
"We serve as we learn,
and learn as we serve."
The philosophy driving all of this is one we've held from the beginning. Every student in training is strengthening the healthcare system today, while becoming the professionals who will lead it tomorrow.
